B Division

Mamas

The Mamas are one of the BAWL’s oldest teams – we’ve been around since the beginning, and we’ve seen it all.  We take softball pretty seriously, and we’re always contending for a championship at the end of the season.  But, we also like to stick together and have fun.  After games, you’ll find us hanging out at the field or at the Brendan Behan Pub.  We have a good mix of ages on our team.  Some Mamas have been playing together since some other Mamas were in high school.  Most of us are in our mid-20s to mid-30s.  A few of us played softball in college, and all of us played competitive sports in college or high school.

Goats

The Goats have quite the distinguished – and entertaining – history in BAWL, having appeared in every possible division multiples times. One of the oldest teams in the league, we are perhaps best known in recent times for our turnaround from an 0-14 season to finishing at the top of our division for the past three consecutive years. In 2009, the Goats are the newest entry in BAWL's top division.

The Goats like to create opportunities for laughs as well victories. Over the years, we have welcomed players of all stripes, experience, and energy to our team. We regularly gather for team BBQs and have been known to compete to find the best wine with the name "goat" in it. (You might be surprised at how many choices are out there.)

Metro Cafe

Our roster is full right now but who knows come June when we hand it in!

We are a laid back, competitive, fun group of ladies. We have many different levels of players on our team ranging from "never played ball at all" (but athletic) to "summer ballers" (in high school) to fast pitch "college players". Some of us like to drink beers after the games and some of us like to watch the beer drinkers. Please note: WE DON'T PRACTICE! We just rely on our "natural talent" to get the job done. So if you are looking for a relaxed environment of natural born athletes (who never practice) to play with in the competitive B-league division, we are your team - Metro Cafe!

Red Scare

As a member of BAWL for over 25 years, Red Scare is one of the original teams in the league.  The team was very recreational in its beginnings but, over the years, has become much more competitive and is currently the defending B division champions.  We have a solid core of players, some of whom have played together for over a decade and others who’ve joined the team over the past 5 years.  What keeps us together is our addiction to playing softball and that we love to have fun.  As a team, we won’t be the last ones standing at the bar (although some of us could be), but we’re definitely a great group of people to hang out with.  We have a lot of returning players but are looking for a few people to round out our roster.

Wild Oats

The Oats have been in the league for quite some time, and although the roster may change, the team has a great core of players. Our team is made up of women who are a mix of all ages and skill levels. We like to win, and enjoy socializing together after the games win or lose.

This year we are looking for some new players! We are looking for a few good position players as well as a couple of strong bats. We typically practice one day per week before the season begins. If you feel like our team is something you would be interested in please e-mail me at aabancroft@gmail.com and I'll send you more information about our practices.

Master Batters
  • If you walk by the field and see a girl playing softball in a running skirt, those are the Master Batters.

  • If 10 other girls look embarrassed that their teammate is wearing a skirt, those are the Master Batters.

  • If you see an elf switch hitting & still hitting homeruns from both sides of the plate, those are the Master Batters.

  • If the coach congratulates her by yelling "baby, you're so pretty," those are the Master Batters.

  • If you see recently saw a scooter swerving in and out of traffic on the Arborway, those are the Master Batters.

  • If you went to a UConn softball game in the late 90s and are having déjà vu, those are the Master Batters (Is that a former Big East Co-Rookie of the Year?)
  • If you overhear two new moms telling their infant daughter that trophies for anything other than first place is really just "first loser", those are the Master Batters.

The Master Batters are currently recruiting someone willing to pitch (at least for the first few games until Texas releases its hold on our regular pitcher), as well as one or two solid infielders or outfielders. Please only email me if you're the type of person who will think it's funny when we yell "Don't forget, every game is a tryout" right when you step up to the plate. sarah.mcauley@gmail.com

C Division

  Fenway Fens Fatales

A fun-loving and semi-competitive team. We love to have fun as a team, beers after games, barbecues at the coach's house, but we also like to win. Most of the players on our team have significant previous experience and love playing softball.

Wild

WILD has been a member of the BAWL league for nearly a decade. Our goal is to have fun and to occasionally, be competitive. We’ve had some good years, and some not so good but we manage to keep coming back year after year. We’re recognizable by the multitude of pooches and a couple of small fry (one of each flavor) on our sidelines. Our roster is currently closed but you never know…

SLAM!

Though we are not the oldest team in the league, SLAM! has been together for 6 years and is going strong! We believe in having fun and if winning happens it just adds to the fun. We have players of all ages and abilities. We are looking for team members who want more than just to play softball. . . to be a part of our SLAM! community, play hard and have fun, make a commitment to Sunday afternoon games for the summer and enjoy the pub after the game.

Club Cafe Players Club

The Club Café Players Club was established in 2006. We started off as just a group of friends who wanted to get together, play some softball, be social and just have a good time.  We all come from a wide range of experience with the sport. There are a few who we weren’t even sure owned a glove to a couple that have played on the high school and/or college level. We’re a competitive, but fun bunch. We understand that winning is important, but having fun playing is more important to us overall. We’re a pretty cohesive group that likes to hang out after games and cheer on our fellow teams or head to a local bar for food and drinks. Despite being a newer team in the BAWL league, we’re improving every year and will hopefully continue to do so. Play on Players!

Night Owls

The NIGHT OWLS have been in the RECREATIONAL division in one form or another for many years. While we are not an overly “social off the field” team, we still manage to have fun, occasionally winning a game. The team usually is a collage of ages (20s-50s) and playing abilities (college to never) of women who want to play not compete.

If you're interested. Contact Betty at bbeemer@juno.com

Come on, get off the couch and join the game!

Lunachicks

We are a friendly, relaxed team who like to go out and have fun.  We are a mix of ages (20's to 50's), and ability levels, with at least one thing in common:  we are happy when we win, but don't get upset if we don't!  We don't have regular practices, but occasionally try to go to the batting cages as a group.   Our team has been playing in BAWL for many years, as WOWW, the Ferries, and now the HopHeads.  We have lost some core players in the last few years, and welcome new players who are looking for a friendly, supportive team.

If you are interested in playing for our team, please email Leah at LYelsey@gmail.com.

  You're Out!

You’re Out is now in its fourth season and growing stronger each year. We are a fun team and enjoy just getting outside to play but we have a competitive edge and are becoming a force to reckon with. Our roster is closed but we welcome fans! We are sponsored by James Gate and go there after every game!

Bad News Babes

The Bad News Babes have been part of BAWL for about seven years. We're a fun group of women, mostly in our 30s and 40s, and the majority of our core players have been Babes for years. We like to win and we play hard, but we don't get bent out of shape when we don't. Last year we were second in the D division.  You'd make a good Babe if you have a sense of humor, are flexible about position, and can grab most of the fly balls that come your way.

Lucky Pitches

Lucky Pitches entered the 2009 summer season as a new team in the league, sponsored by both the Jeanie Johnston Pub and SHE.  Comprised of players of many different talents and abilities, we hope to be competitive while still managing to have a fun summer with our new teammates.   In addition to our talented on-field team, we have a team “mom” (who brings cookies to games), an “official” team photographer and a token male cheerleader.

You will be able to find us drinking (preferably with our opposing team) after the games at Jeanie Johnston’s.
